Christina Alyce Beauty

Testing and reviewing the best of clean beauty.

As someone with incredibly curly, thick, and unmanageable hair (picture Merida from Disney's Brave with light brown hair), I feel like I'm on a never-ending quest to find that one product (or multiple products, even) that can soften, define, and control my mane. And to my utter joy, I think I may have found it.

Most curly hair is incredibly dry, so using a traditional shampoo can be detrimental to what few oils your hair can produce, and many conditioners aren't nearly moisturizing to replace what was lost, plus what it already lacked. Many curly girls opt for either the No-Poo method (skipping shampoo altogether, often substituting with vinegar, or something similar) or Co-Washing, which is a single product that cleanses gently while it conditions your hair. Avocado Co Wash is obviously the latter.
It is smart to stay away from sulfates and other stripping ingredients when you have curly hair, and this is where I'm a bit unsure of Avocado Co Wash. While it does contain multiple sulfates, it still feels incredibly nourishing, and leaves my hair in better condition than anything else I've tried. This is due to the other ingredients that make up this super moisturizing product

Rosemary, lavender, and nettle infusion soothes and clears the scalp, while cider vinegar cleanses and balances the pH of your scalp. Many oils and butters are found in this product, including cupuacu butter, cocoa butter, olive oil, which all nourish the hair and scalp by adding moisture and protection. Fresh avocado is present, to lend it's intensely hydrating properties to the hair.

I find that using Avocado Co Wash on it's own with no other shampoo or conditioner gives my hair the perfect amount of moisture. Using this product does tend to be a little tricky at first, because it is a solid product that does not produce much lather. If using Lush's solid conditioners leaves you frustrated, this one wont be much better. I do find that pinching off a small piece, wetting it, and mashing it into my palm til it forms a paste is more fruitful than trying to lather the whole block. After forming the paste, apply it to your hair and gently comb through with your fingers or a wide tooth comb to distribute. This does not contain silicones like traditional conditioners, so your fingers will not glide easily through your hair. Leave on while you finish up your shower, then rinse out. I find that I do have a lot of residue left on my hair after using this, but that works perfectly for me. My curls don't look greasy, just lightly defined, and this lets me skip any additional styling products. If you have fine or straight hair, this will likely be too rich of a conditioner for you, and leave you with heavy, greasy locks. This works best for those who severely lack moisture, and was specifically designed for those with curl types 3B-4C, or those with generally damaged and severely dry hair. Those with type 4 curls may even want to follow this with an additional conditioner.

Overall this product has been fantastic for me, it has cut my hair product use from 3-4 different products to 1, making the higher price tag worth every penny. And I can't forget to mention it leaves my hair smelling like lemon pound cake!

I have been on the hunt for a conditioner that’s rich enough for my dry locks for what seems like an eternity. I have very thick, coarse, and naturally curly hair with a 3A curl pattern, that just begs for moisture. I have tried countless drugstore conditioners and a fair few salon conditioners, and nothing has really had much of a wow factor. Upon discovering Lush’s hair care, I saw they had a few items in their line up that I was pretty eager to try. Retread was first up.
Retread is certainly a very hydrating conditioner, but you may not believe it based on the way it looks in the pot or feels on the hair. When I first used it, I was a bit disappointed in how liquid the consistency was, and I still don’t think a black pot is the best packaging for this product. It’s a little messy to scoop out, and I found that decanting it into a shower gel bottle makes it so much easier to measure out the right amount.. not to mention it puts you one empty pot closer to a free face mask!
When applying this to the hair, it felt very strange. To be honest, I felt like I could’ve used half the pot and my hair would’ve just soaked it all in! You don’t get that slippery, detangling feeling with this conditioner, which makes it difficult to judge how much you need, and you will go through the tub quite quickly if you’re not careful. Also, without the traditional detangling effect it made it quite difficult for me to run my wide tooth comb through my hair, which is unfortunate because as someone with curls, the shower is the only opportunity I have to detangle my locks without disrupting my curl pattern. It does take some work, but it is possible to eventually get the brush through. I found that combing while rinsing tends to make it slightly easier, because in the water is where the conditioner seems to come to life.
During rinsing, your hair does begin to feel a little more slippery, and you can really feel the avocado oil, olive oil, soya yogurt, lanolin, and jojoba oil coating each strand to hydrate, protect, and add shine. I made the mistake of distributing the conditioner evenly from root to tip the first time I used this, and quickly realized this is probably better suited to just the lower 2/3 of my hair. My inital use found me rinsing my roots for quite a while, and I still ended up a bit greasy. But since adjusting to just the roots, my hair feels much more balanced. I am in desperate need of a hair cut to remove my split ends, but in the meantime, Retread has done a wonderful job keeping my frizz and unruly ends in check. I notice my hair has much more shine than It did with other conditioners, and in conjunction with Avocado Co Wash, my curls are beautifully defined and I don’t need any additional styling product! If I’m going to be straightening my hair, I’ll use a different shampoo, because the Co Wash has lots of oils, so on straight hair, it ends up looking a little greasy. I really liked pairing this with the Jumping Juniper Shampoo Bar when straightening my hair.
So, while I didn’t exactly start off completely impressed by this, I have grown to love how it makes my hair feel with just a little trial and error. It probably wouldn’t give great results to those with fine or oily hair types, but for someone who requires a lot of moisture, this is a lifesaver.
